He is a spirit in the Hebrew, Christian, and Muslim religious texts. In the Book of Enoch, he is described as the chief of the rebellious angels and a Fallen Angel cast out from heaven. In the Hebrew tradition, he is the demon of the wilderness, the recipient of the scapegoat on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).
In the Muslim tradition, Asasel or Azazil was a devil, sometimes identified as Iblis, the offspring of a jinn, who was similarly cast out from heaven for refusing to acknowledge Adam, the first human. Asasel, along with Shemyaza, is credited with teaching humans how to forge weapons and make war on each other, and how to deceive one another by using the mask of cosmetics.
